PROTECTING YOUR MOST IMPORTANT ASSETS

Chubb Fire & Security is a renowned name in the fire sector across Ireland but somewhat of a hidden gem for security solutions, according to Managing Director Alan O’Connor. In this exclusive interview, Alan reveals how Chubb’s people are the difference makers when it comes to securing and protecting a business’s most important assets

Q1: Can you tell us about Chubb?
Chubb has a rich background in fire safety and security solutions, cementing our position as a leader in Ireland recently. With a workforce of 195 employees across both northern and southern regions, including approximately 120 field-based engineers, 28 dedicated sales professionals, stores and administrative support, plus an experienced management team, we are well-equipped to serve our customers.

Chubb works closely with a diverse range of businesses, providing comprehensive fire safety and security solutions. Our aim is to ensure the safety and security of our customers’ people, property, and assets. Ireland’s appeal as a gateway into Europe, along with its English-speaking environment, makes it an ideal base for multinational businesses seeking our services.
While our presence is more pronounced in the Republic of Ireland, we maintain a notable presence in Northern Ireland also. In terms of security solutions, our business size is comparable, and a significant portion of our operations in the Republic of Ireland is conducted abroad, primarily in Europe, serving multinational clients in the retail and data centre sectors.

Since joining the APi Group in 2022, we have undergone a genuine transformation in our workplace culture. Having been in the business for 29 years, I have seen many attempts to change the culture. But today, we are all pulling in the same direction and focused on nurturing talent and building leaders of the future.

Q2: How do your security solutions complement your fire safety services?
Our fire safety solutions encompass a comprehensive range of services tailored to meet the diverse needs of our customers. For instance, in facilities such as pharmaceutical plants, the bulk of our work, around 70% to 80%, revolves around fire detection and alarm systems. We also integrate voice alarm and public address systems (VAPA) directly into fire systems, constituting roughly 10% of our services.
Additionally, we provide gas suppression technologies, such as Argonite, and offer gas detection, which is a vital component in environments like laboratories where hazardous gases are present.

Historically, we excelled in locks and safes, serving prominent clients in the financial sector, such as banks and post offices. However, as the banking landscape evolved with diminishing requirements around cash in branches, coupled with a significant shift in data centre delivery models across Europe, we redirected resources towards our overseas ventures, emphasising sustainable growth and capitalising on emerging opportunities in international markets.

To address the evolving security landscape in Ireland, we are enhancing our local presence through strategic initiatives to boost our capabilities in security monitoring and expand our operations in key regions such as Dublin and Cork.
By integrating our fire safety expertise with advanced security solutions, such as access control systems, state-of-the-art surveillance solutions, intrusion detection technologies, and remote monitoring capabilities, we can offer a holistic approach to protecting businesses. This not only enhances safety but also provides added value to our clients. Through unified solutions, we provide greater convenience and peace of mind to our clients, knowing that all their safety and security needs are being addressed by a single, trusted provider.

Q3: Why should businesses work with Chubb?
At Chubb, we have an unwavering focus on building and nurturing relationships, underpinned by a commitment to delivering exceptional service throughout the entire lifecycle of our systems. Unlike a transactional approach, where low cost most often wins the day, we prioritise long-term partnerships with our customers. From initial design and installation to ongoing maintenance and support, we are deeply invested in the success and safety of our customers’ operations.

This dedication to relationship-building extends beyond Ireland to our overseas ventures, where we proactively align our resources with our customers’ needs, ensuring readiness to deliver on commitments.
Innovation-wise, we recognise the shifting landscape within the security industry.

As analogue systems become obsolete and digital solutions become standard, our focus on service delivery becomes increasingly paramount. Our ability to manage contracts efficiently, adapt to evolving technologies, and provide unparalleled service helps to distinguish us. We are not product-focused; we are solution-oriented, leveraging our expertise to deliver results that exceed expectations.

Our people-first culture is at the heart of everything we do. It sounds like a marketing line, but it really is true. Through internal initiatives like leader labs and people matter sessions, we are investing in the development of our team members at all levels. This investment not only enhances our leadership pipeline but also creates a positive and empowered workforce. As a result, we’re seeing a cultural shift within our teams, with a greater sense of engagement and alignment with our organisational values.
In essence, what truly differentiates us is our relentless pursuit of excellence, fuelled by our people-first philosophy and a steadfast commitment to building enduring relationships with our clients.

Q4: What are some of the successes you’ve had over the last few years?
I’m proud of our track record and long-standing partnerships. Many key customers, such as leading pharmaceutical manufacturers, have been working with us for many decades. We are their trusted partner, providing comprehensive fire and security solutions to their facilities. These partnerships are a testament to the quality of our services and the strength of our client relationships.

We are set to provide security solutions for several high-profile projects, including data centres across Europe and the opening of several new retail stores with another of our longest-standing customers.

These projects underscore our ability to deliver comprehensive security solutions tailored to meet the diverse needs of our clients on a global scale.
While confidentiality agreements limit our ability to disclose specific details about our work, our sustained presence and continued collaboration with these industry giants speak volumes about the value we bring to their operations.

Q5: What excites you about the future with Chubb?
What excites me the most about the Chubb business in Ireland is the incredible transformation we’ve undergone in recent years.
We’ve shifted gears from a business with marginal returns to one consistently achieving remarkable results. This journey has been about more than just financial gains; it’s been about rebuilding the brand, strengthening our fundamentals, and making strategic decisions that propel us to new heights.
Now that we have solidified our foundation, I am particularly excited about the opportunities in the data centre market. The space requirement is soaring, and we are fully poised to meet these needs.

What sets us apart is our collaborative approach, not just within our Irish operations but across the broader Chubb network. By breaking down silos and fostering collaboration between our teams, we can leverage our collective expertise to seize new opportunities.

Moreover, our commitment to continuous training and development and investment in our people is also really exciting. Employee training, certification programmes, and professional development opportunities ensure that our teams remain at the forefront of industry trends and technological advancements. This investment in our people empowers them to deliver outstanding results for our customers. And that’s what it’s all about.
