VELUX launches Standard glass rooflight for flat roof projects

A new mid-range glass rooflight designed to bridge the gap between plastic domes and premium glass.

The VELUX Standard glass rooflight is built for the middle of the market. Suited to residential renovations, extensions, public buildings and spaces where premium glass is unnecessary and plastic domes feel like a compromise. It’s from the same brand installers already trust, comes with the same fit-and-finish expectations — at a price point that makes glass a realistic recommendation rather than an aspirational one. For many years, homeowners have been asking installers if there’s an alternative to the plastic dome, and while the answer has been yes, installers have known that the quote for the glass option wouldn’t fit the budget. Previously, the two VELUX rooflight options for flat roofs were at either end of the spectrum. At one end, the plastic dome was familiar, easy to fit and priced to suit most jobs. At the other was high-performing, premium glass, positioned at a much higher price point.

No kerb, no wasted time
The VELUX Standard glass rooflight doesn’t have a kerb, so there’s less work required around the opening and installations are cleaner and faster. On a two-rooflight project, that can be the difference between finishing the project that day and coming back the next morning.

Step up in performance
When compared with a plastic dome, the new Standard glass rooflight delivers an uplift in thermal performance and sound reduction. The glass isn’t premium and it’s not pretending to be — it’s positioned for spaces where the priority is an improvement on the dome without pushing the quote into high-end territory. It’s the upgrade a homeowner notices and mentions to their neighbour, which is how installers pick up their next job.

An upgrade that’s easy to say yes to
The VELUX Standard glass rooflight is compatible with the VELUX blind range, so the project discussion doesn’t have to end with the rooflight itself. Homeowners who have opted to switch from plastic to glass are likely to be open to adding blinds. By including them as an option on the initial quote, they can be fitted at the same time as the rooflights, avoiding the need for a separate visit and the additional fitting charge.

The new flat roof default
Installers are hearing “more glass, less plastic” and homeowners are being more intentional with their design choices – even on modest extensions. The VELUX Standard glass rooflight is now available. Full specifications, compatible blinds and installation information can all be found on the VELUX website.
It’s worth a look before the next flat roof project — because the default option has changed and the quotes that reflect that will be the ones homeowners say yes to.
