Siniat launches VIVACycle plasterboard made with 100% recycled gypsum
Construction materials specialist Siniat has launched VIVACycle™, a new plasterboard manufactured using 100% recycled gypsum, designed to help architects, contractors and specifiers meet circular economy and sustainability goals.
VIVACycle™ offers the same performance as Siniat’s standard plasterboard but is manufactured using 100% recycled gypsum, typically comprising 97% post-consumer waste and 3% pre-consumer waste. Its paper facers are also composed of 96% recycled fibre.
The new plasterboard provides a practical solution for reducing construction waste and supporting projects designed and built in accordance with circular economy principles.
It has been developed to support sustainability objectives including BREEAM and Circular Economy Statements required by local development strategies such as the London Plan.
Supporting a more circular construction industry
Andy Mudie, Head of Marketing for Siniat, said: “We are already committed to the integration of recycled materials in all our factories. Our plasterboard manufacturing process includes market-leading percentages of recycled post-consumer gypsum. Gypsum is completely recyclable and can be processed infinitely without losing quality.
“But this is not only the foundation of our transition to a more circular model. VIVACycle™ is part of a wider VIVA range of products and services, helping to scale reuse and lower carbon solutions across the built environment sector through the construction products marketplace.
“Collaboration and engagement with the supply chain is crucial for architects, contractors and specifiers who want to ensure material reuse is achieved in their projects. In bringing VIVACycle™ to the UK marketplace, Siniat is helping to advance the transition to a more sustainable, resilient and ultimately more profitable construction industry.”
According to Siniat, the construction industry accounts for approximately 60% of waste in the UK and around 40% of waste sent to landfill. Environmental objectives including Net Zero targets and the Environmental Improvement Plan are focused on eliminating avoidable waste and increasing recycling rates.
Reducing construction waste
Oliver Cripps, Head of Sustainability for Siniat, said: “Specifying VIVACycle™ is about more than choosing a product with 100% recycled gypsum content. It is about supporting the reduction of waste at source and preventing waste in reworking.
“VIVACycle™ transforms waste materials into a product that offers quality, performance and circular value. Better practice in reducing waste can be achieved when we work in collaboration and requires a behaviour change across the supply chain, from specification to materials provision and throughout the building phase.”
VIVACycle™ can also be combined with the Siniat takeback service to provide further circular economy benefits.
