GEORGE QUINN LTD – ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE DESIGNS
Irelands period houses and listed buildings are a part of our architectural identity. Preservation of these historical buildings requires specialised skills. The staircase is a vital part of these conservation projects, the houses were designed with the staircase as a focal point in the entrance hallway and a reflection of the character of each building.
George Quinn Ltd have a proven track record in bespoke reproduction having gained knowledge and experience working with Irelands leading joinery manufacturers on residential, commercial and hospitality projects.

One example of this was the restoration of a house on Sydney Avenue, Blackrock, Dublin. The house was built in the 1880s and was purchased to be a residential dwelling. The brief was for the creation of a practical modern living space whilst keeping all of the Victorian period detail intact thus retaining the character of the building.
Work was carried out by Charlton Construction, a Dublin based construction company with years of experience in the field. The architect for the project was Greg Tisdall from Studio D architects.

Charlton Construction engaged the expertise of Colin Healy Staircase specialists to carry out the work on the staircase element of the project. Colin Healy stairs have over 25years experience in all aspects of staircase manufacturing from bespoke to attic staircases.
The work required to restore the staircase was extensive. Repair work had to be undertaken on the strings, treads and risers and replaced where necessary. The handrail had to be carefully repaired with some sections needing replacement to ensure user safety.
George Quinn Ltd were tasked with reproducing the spindles to ensure a match to the existing Victorian design. This involved the use of our AutoCAD software to create the technical drawings of the various spindle dimensions based on a sample provided. Various considerations came into play such as any damage to the sample spindles or years of paint layers which could affect some of the dimension details. Once the profile specifications are complete the spindles can be re-created to their original design. The success of the completed project is testament to the collaboration of all the skills required to preserve the historical architecture of our listed buildings both internally and externally.
