EXPANDING HORIZONS

Designer Group is committed to playing a major role in creating a future where innovation and environmental responsibility go hand-in-hand

Founded in 1992, Designer Group has expanded from a local contractor to an international engineering contractor providing electrical and mechanical solutions. Over the last five years, the company has embarked on an ambitious growth journey, diversifying into new and rapidly developing sectors – data centres, energy generation, decarbonisation solutions and life sciences.

As the business has evolved, so too has its leadership team. Designer Group has made strategic appointments to the Executive Board to support its expansion. One key figure in this transformation is Gary Byrne, Executive Director for Energy, Industrial and Life Sciences. Gary brings a wealth of experience to the role and is spearheading the company’s efforts in these critical sectors, ensuring Designer Group continues to lead the way in providing innovative and sustainable solutions.

Decarbonisation and Sustainability Leadership
Designer Group recognises the urgency of addressing climate change, particularly given that the industry accounts for nearly 30% of global carbon emissions. The company’s commitment to decarbonisation focuses on partnering with clients to help them achieve their sustainability goals.

A prime example of this is the decarbonisation initiative with Diageo in Africa and Mexico where Designer Group worked closely with Diageo’s teams to implement strategies that significantly reduced their carbon footprint, aligning with the company’s priorities.

Gary Byrne, Executive Director for Energy, Industrial, and Life Sciences, explains: “One of our most impactful projects was with the East African Breweries, which produces the well-known local beer, Tusker. By switching from oil to biomass, using macadamia nut shells that would otherwise be discarded, we cut the brewery’s emissions by an impressive 65%. This innovative solution not only generated an income stream for local agricultural producers but also enabled the brewery to meet all its energy needs through steam power, saving in excess of €5m per Annum in op ex costs in the process. This project exemplifies how sustainability can drive both environmental and economic benefits for our clients.

“Looking ahead, we are fully committed to becoming net zero by 2035. This ambitious goal is part of a broader strategy to transform our operations and deliver the most efficient, tailored electrical and mechanical solutions for every project.”

Energy: Powering the Future
In addition to its decarbonisation efforts, Designer Group is also playing a pivotal role in addressing Ireland’s energy challenges. Gary highlights the company’s involvement in the energy sector: “Ireland’s power supply challenges are no secret. As demand continues to grow, especially from the tech sector, we recognise the critical need for reliable and sustainable energy solutions. To that end, we are currently working on three onsite power generation projects which are vital to ensuring that data centre and tech companies can continue investing in Ireland while the country addresses ongoing power constraints. These projects showcase our ability to deliver innovative energy solutions that not only meet current demand but also support future growth.”

Life Sciences: Expanding Horizons in a Critical Sector
Although Designer Group has long been recognised for its expertise in the Electrical & Mechanical Building Services sector, the company is rapidly establishing itself as a key player in the life sciences industry. Over the past five years, Designer Group has made significant strides, delivering more than €200 million worth of projects in the life sciences sector. Gary Byrne shares: “Backed by a highly experienced team, we are continuing to grow our presence in this sector. Recent project wins with global pharmaceutical giants such as Pfizer and SK Biotech demonstrate our commitment to providing specialist services in this evolving and critical industry.”
Building a Sustainable Future Together

“At Designer Group, we believe the future of construction is built on sustainability and innovation,” says Gary Byrne. “Our expansion into Energy, Decarbonisation, and Life Sciences is not just about growing our business – it’s about leading the charge in transforming the industry for the better.”

He continues: “As we look ahead, our mission remains clear – to collaborate with clients and design teams in delivering electrical & mechanical solutions that push the boundaries of efficiency, sustainability, and performance. The projects we undertake today are shaping a legacy that will benefit not just our clients and the wider industry, but also future generations.”

By combining cutting-edge technology, sustainable practices, and a forward-thinking approach, Designer Group is committed to playing a pivotal role in creating a future where innovation and environmental responsibility go hand-in-hand.
