Engineers Warn Infrastructure Delays Are Impacting Housing Delivery in Ireland

The Association of Consulting Engineers of Ireland (ACEI) has warned that delays in infrastructure delivery in Ireland are continuing to restrict housing development, as it launches its flagship event, Engineering Ireland’s Future.

With housing demand in Ireland still outpacing supply, the organisation is calling for stronger collaboration between Government and the engineering sector to ensure infrastructure is delivered efficiently and at scale.

Engineering Ireland’s Future Conference at Croke Park

The Engineering Ireland’s Future conference will take place on May 14th at Croke Park, bringing together leading voices from across the construction, engineering, and public sectors.

The conference will focus on how engineering can support Ireland’s future development, with key themes including:

    • Housing delivery and infrastructure planning
    • Climate adaptation and sustainable infrastructure
    • Talent shortages in the engineering sector
    • Digital innovation and AI in construction
    • Barriers to project delivery in Ireland

Addressing Ireland’s Infrastructure and Housing Challenges

As part of its call to action, ACEI is urging greater recognition of the role consulting engineers in Ireland play in enabling housing and infrastructure delivery.

The conference will examine how to ensure infrastructure keeps pace with Ireland’s long-term needs, while also exploring the global role of Irish engineering expertise.

Keynote Speakers and Industry Leaders

The event will feature a keynote address from Jack Chambers, who is expected to provide an update on the Government’s Accelerating Infrastructure Report.

He will be joined by Bent Flyvbjerg, a globally recognised authority on megaprojects and infrastructure delivery.

Other speakers include:

  • Sean O’Driscoll (Glenn Dimplex Group)
  • Brian Caulfield
  • Fergal O’Rourke (IDA Chair)
  • Colette O’Shea
  • Sinead Timoney
  • John Brennan

The conference will be hosted by Ingrid Miley, former RTÉ Industry and Employment Correspondent.

CEO Debate on the Future of Engineering in Ireland

The event will conclude with a high-level CEO debate examining how the engineering sector can strengthen its influence and ensure it is recognised as a key driver of Ireland’s economic and infrastructure development.

ACEI Calls for Action on Infrastructure Delivery

Director General of ACEI, Shane Dempsey, said the conference comes at a critical time:

“If Ireland is to meet its housing targets and deliver the infrastructure required for economic growth, consulting engineers must be empowered to design and deliver the solutions that make it possible.

At last year’s conference, we identified practical solutions which were submitted to Government and to Minister Jack Chambers to help accelerate delivery. We look forward to an update on that progress.

This conference is about moving from ambition to action and ensuring engineering is central to Ireland’s future.”
