Enhanced Visitor Experience at One of Ireland’s Most Important Heritage Sites

Located on the edge of a dramatic 100-metre Atlantic cliff on Árainn in County Galway, Dún Aonghasa is one of Ireland’s most significant prehistoric monuments, dating back more than 3,000 years to the Bronze and Iron Ages.

Recognised internationally for its impressive dry-stone fortifications and unique archaeological landscape, the site remains a major attraction along the Wild Atlantic Way and welcomes over 125,000 visitors annually.

The upgraded visitor centre now provides a modern, immersive and fully accessible gateway experience for visitors travelling to the iconic cliff-top fort.

Key Features of the Dún Aonghasa Visitor Centre Redevelopment

  • The refurbishment project includes a wide range of upgrades designed to improve visitor engagement, accessibility and sustainability, including:
  • A fully redesigned interpretative exhibition exploring the history of Dún Aonghasa and the Aran Islands
  • A new multilingual digital app supporting self-guided heritage tours
  • Improved visitor reception and circulation areas
  • Upgraded signage and interpretative features across the site
  • Accessibility improvements and modernised building standards
  • Enhanced landscaping, drainage and public realm works
  • Flood mitigation measures to improve year-round visitor access
  • Sustainability and climate adaptation upgrades to improve environmental performance

The project also strengthens the wider tourism offering across Árainn, Inis Meáin and Inis Oírr by encouraging visitors to explore additional heritage sites and local attractions.

Ministers Highlight Importance of Sustainable Tourism Investment

Speaking at the official opening, Minister Kevin Moran said the redevelopment represents a major investment in protecting and presenting one of Ireland’s most iconic national monuments.

He said:

“This investment at Dún Aonghasa represents a major enhancement of one of Ireland’s most significant and visually striking national monuments. The upgraded visitor centre allows us to better manage visitor numbers, improve accessibility, and present the story of this extraordinary site in a way that matches its significance.”

Minister Peter Burke highlighted the importance of the site to the local tourism economy and businesses across the Aran Islands.

He said:

“Dún Aonghasa plays a central role in the tourism economy of Árainn, supporting accommodation providers, tour operators, transport services, bicycle hire and local food and craft businesses.”

Investment Supports Heritage Preservation and Year-Round Tourism

Christopher O’Sullivan said the project demonstrates how strategic investment can support both heritage preservation and local communities.

Meanwhile, Caroline Bocquel of Fáilte Ireland said the redevelopment will allow visitors to engage more deeply with the history and cultural significance of the Aran Islands while protecting the site for future generations.

The upgraded Dún Aonghasa Visitor Centre is now open year-round, with guided tours operated by the OPW.
