To keep up with increasing demand, IKO Polymeric have expanded their existing Chesterfield headquarters with an energy-efficient warehouse, featuring a top class building envelope and daylight solution from both Kingspan Insulated Panels and Kingspan Light + Air.
IKO Polymeric is the UK’s leading manufacturer of single-ply membranes. Their new 4,500m2 warehouse will provide storage space for rolls of finished membranes, freeing up space within the existing manufacturing site for a new pre-fabrication area and Research and Development facilities. To create a modern and efficient building without causing disruption to the continuing business, a full system of Kingspan products was specified.

“We have been working with Kingspan for over a decade, supplying our IKO Armourplan membrane for its Topdek roofing system. As a result, we knew that its products could not only achieve the thermal and structural performance we required but, as they are designed to integrate with one another, could also help to establish a reliable build programme.”
It was essential that the new building looked professional and worked within the aesthetic of the industrial site. A typical ‘box’ design was chosen and achieved with horizontally-laid Micro-Rib wall panels. This is Kingspan Insulated Panels’ most popular profile and is made up of slim, parallel ridges that give a sleek, textured appearance when viewed from close-up. However, a key stipulation of the planning permissions was that the new warehouse could not be a standard grey building, therefore the panels were selected in graduated custom shades of blue to create a welcoming façade that blends into the skyscape above. The walls were finished with bespoke fabrications such as Top Hats and Flashings to ensure a clean, professional finish.
The building envelope was completed with a Topdek flat roof system, with a durable and UV-resistant IKO Armourplan membrane in a complementary Mid-Grey. Topdek is a single component, factory pre-engineered roof deck that can deliver U-values as low as 0.15 W/m2K.
Meanwhile, Kingspan Light + Air worked with the project team to create a lighting specification which maximised the natural daylight within the warehouse. To achieve this, Kingspan Day-Lite Vault rooflights were installed. The products are specially designed to integrate seamlessly with the Kingspan Topdek Membrane Roof system and this allowed a simple, fast-track installation programme. The remaining artificial lighting demand was then met through Kingspan Smart-Lite Kistral II lighting. The LED luminaries within the light were installed with open area optics and daylight harvesting dimming controls – ensuring the working plane was effectively lit during periods of low natural light. The high-quality artificial light also mimics midday sunlight in colour temperature, ensuring a pleasant working environment for staff.
The design and installation of the roof and wall panels were all handled by Kingspan’s in-house technical team, who also delivered a presentation to the factory managers at the specification side of the build to cover the benefits of composite panels as well as the finishes available. The field services team were also available throughout the construction stage to answer technical queries and ensure compliance, including assisting with the design of the daylighting and lighting systems. IKO, Kingspan, and Roofdec Ltd’s collaboration on the Chesterfield site achieved the completion of the envelope on time and on budget, but the project also showcases the best of a long-standing relationship with a building built to last.
